| Less than 2 percent
of American families live on farms in this country today. This
small number of people is responsible for feeding the rest of
the country and would be unable to accomplish that feat without
the best that technology has to offer. Here at Titan Peach Farms
we recognize the importance of technology and strive to use it
to the benefit of our consumers.
Irrigation
Our farm is stretches over about 10 square miles of Edgefield
and Saluda Counties. This makes it difficult to manage resources
from one point. Our irrigation system now allows us to do just
that. Through the use of a computer and radio signals, we are
able to control irrigation on all parts of our farm from one
location.
The use of
computers also allows for precise irrigation and accurate record
keeping to give the fruit just the right amount of water and
nutrients to insure the best growth all while controlling
run-off and limited water resources. The automated part of this
system allows us to irrigate when the trees need it most without
the constraints of labor and management hours. This high tech
system is similar in many ways to an automated yard sprinkler
system except on a much larger scale. This system also has a
means of communicating back to us.
Packing Facility
We take great pride in the quality of our fruit and in our Titan
Brand name. Our state of the art packing facility enables us to
ship some of the highest quality fruit in the marketplace. We
have a computerized weight sizer that ensures our consumers get
exactly what they pay for. Through the use of customized
software, we are able to keep accurate packout records to aid in
production and marketing decisions.
Our packing
facility is where we focus a large portion of our food safety and security
initiatives. As producers and packers of fresh fruit we have
committed ourselves to producing not only the highest quality,
but also the safest fruit in the industry. Click on the Food
Safety page to learn more about this comprehensive program.
All of this
technology, including real-time record keeping, is at the
fingertips of our packing manager. Click on the Stages of
Production page to learn about each stage of production with a
comprehensive look at packing.
Inventory
Inventory Control is one of the most crucial aspects of our
business. Since we are dealing with perishable products, it is
essential to keep track of our products to avoid aging before
shipment, thereby ensuring the freshest product possible.
Through the use of hand held data collectors we are able to
accurately track the production of any field on our farm or any
variety of peach we have. We are able to track a peach from the
field through our packing facility, into a box, onto a truck and
into your neighborhood grocery store. This state of the system
designed by Chalmers Carr and created by the folks at Unisun
Corporation, allows us real time access to our products.
Our state of the
art inventory control system, based on a bar code system, allows
us to real time access to our products. It also allows us to
Payroll
None of the technology we have would work without good employees
to execute it. At Titan Peach Farms, our employees range in
number from 45 during the fall and winter to almost 300 during
our busiest time of the year. Keeping accurate payroll records
for each of these employees is a challenge.
When you add that
many of these work on a production basis some of the time, this
challenge becomes more complicated. We have a system based on
badges and portable data collectors that assures each employee
is paid for his/her production. It also provides data to aid in
labor decisions for the management team and fulfills many
Department of Labor requirements.
These
technologies, along with our talented employees and management
practices are providing us a means to spring into the new,
business oriented, era of agriculture. This helps to insure that
we remain part of that 2 percent in agriculture responsible for
feeding the rest of the world.
